2010 A new year,  some new work…

Bonded by Blood II: A Romance In Red Features James Cheetham’s short Story ‘Bumper Shine’.

Foreword by Wendy Brewer

Many years ago, I took on the arduous task of editor for a “For the Luv” horror ezine called The Murder Hole. There was no monetary gratification for myself, for the lady who hosted the website, or for any of the contributors. Yet month after month I was overwhelmed with submissions and I managed to put forth issues highlighting some of the best dark fiction out there. From well-established writers to semi-established writers working their way to the top, to newbies,  I’ve watched over the years as many of the authors I published moved on to become award-winning novelists, mass-market novelists and even publishers/editors. It’s kind of like watching your babies grow up to be successful in doing what they love and do best: writing.

That being said, I completely understand what Steven N. Marshall puts into his ezine each and every month. It takes a lot of dedication. It takes a lot of hard work.  It requires enthusiasm and unconstrained loyalty to his chosen path, even in the face of adversity and perseverance overcoming animosity. And Steve manages to pull it off, putting out a new issue every month with style and flair, overwhelmingly denoting the true reasons he continues.

It’s all about the love.

And the authors published by SNM every month demonstrate that same love and dedication. Reading the stories in this anthology, you can’t help but see the love these writers have for their craft of writing.  Their best efforts shine through brilliantly in every story, adding new twists to old plots, bending rules, breaking out of the proverbial ‘box’, showing the readers that not only do they love to write, but they write for a simple reason: They want to entertain you, the reader.

This yearly crowning achievement published by SNM is a work of love, devotion and commitment by the authors and editors for those who enjoy and appreciate the efforts put forth by all involved. It is an extraordinary accomplishment, packed with compelling horror and dark fiction that will keep you turning the pages long after you have turned the lights out and gone to bed.

I was truly honored when Steve approached me about doing the introduction for this anthology. The anthologies he puts out prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the writing and creating of stories, and the genuine objective to entertain isn’t all about the money. Its  about literary achievement in the horror community and becoming known.

The editor knows this.

The contributors know this.

Now the readers know this.

It’s all about telling a story.

And, most importantly…

It’s all about “for the love of.”

I have never been so personally impressed by one anthology in my life. The consistency of quality writing, they way each story stands apart from one, the literary prose, the haunting residual in the mind, it all marks that perfect masterpiece of fiction called Bonded By Blood II: A Romance in Red. This is literally comprised of the Stories of the Month for a year and a half, over careful consideration and selection from a magazine that publishes cerebral, psychological horror that isn’t afraid to cross taboo thresholds yet suggest something so horrific that one is grateful it’s kept backstage. Let these brave pioneers of the next Poe/Lovecraft generation whisper their words to your soul and haunt you in the most personal way: through the power of suggestion and horrific eloquence. May these stories darken your daydreams and illuminate your nightmares…

The Mausoleum is now built…and the Dead have been ripped from the Crypt and exhumed from the Tomb.

James Cheetham voted SNM Author of the Year

Excerpt from SNM Horror Magazine: As far as the SNM Horror Author of the Year, this writer truly personifies the darkness of the human heart. Some may classify his work as dark fiction over horror, but this is a recently categorized classification of the new generation. When it comes to multi-layered twists that unravel like a tapestry of terror, he captures raw human emotion with great in-depth character development. This author has enough universal appeal to be a top bestseller in the horror genre. Concisely written and ever absorbing the reader into turning the next page, he’s had not one but two SNM Stories of the Month with “Bumper Shine” and “The Wilting May Flowers.” He also appears in both the SNM Anthologies. Allow me to extend a huge congratulations to the decisive winner: SNM Horror Author of the Year: James Cheetham.

A short story of mine called The Wilting May Flowers has been published by NVH (New Voices of Horror) Magazine and will be featured in an Anthologythey are planning for October of 2008.N.V.H. Magazine.

I want to thank Steve, Doc and David for making The Wilting May Flowers their story of the month for April, 2008. I appreciate the accolades.

I have in the meantime started the second book in the Prairie Frost series Seasons of The Brittle Harvest Part Two: Prairie Flood, which continues the saga of the few survivors of an apocalyptic disaster.

The struggle goes on as Suzanne, Terry and Glenn try to stay alive on the unforgiving Canadian Prairies. If the weather and the elementsdon’t get to them, the cabin fever or the walking dead just might.

I am also working on my next full length novel with the working title Chokecherry. Chokecherry will be a return to the Here and There, first introduced in Fade To Pale.

I know there are many still asking when Prairie Frost will finally come out. I hope it’s soon, I really do. I want my fellow Canadians (and Manitobans) to have their very own zombie tale to be proud of, made especially for lovers of horror and zombies.

James Cheetham has established a company called Prairie Frost Media,

Along with his partner, photographer Doug Ritter, James will take your photo,

“You’ve heard of The Kiss Army? This is Cheetham’s Army of the Undead.”

And what might such a concept cost?

“It’s $20.00 Canadian to have your image turned into a zombie. With that initial cost you receive the manipulated zombie image in jpeg form, and a reference/membership number

What kind of products can one order?

“We are doing T-shirts now. Every one is one of a kind, where else can you get a Zombie T-shirt that you become the zombie on. We also offer frameable portraits, 8X10′s, Christmas cards, and of course personalized Cheetham’s Zombies – Photo Cookies, that were a big hit this past Halloween. In fact, everybody who orders a $20.00 Cheetham’s Zombie Makeover will be automatically entered to become one of four of our possible 2010 ‘Cheetham’s Zombies – Halloween Photo’ cookie models. Your zombie mug could be shipped all over North America in the form of Myphotocookie.com’s delicious treats.”

And that’s not all…

“We are in talks with several companies to offer other intriguing products,

If you would like to become a zombie,

“We require high quality photos, anything under 1MB is not worth sending, especially if you want to order your Zombie on a T-shirt for example. We don’t charge anything until we see the photo. If you send us a photo we will reply, letting you know before hand if it will work or not so you aren’t wasting your time. If it will work, you can then go to the website

The photos should be over 1MB, color, and free of FX makeup or special effects. No black and white photos, no sunglasses (prescription glasses are fine).

“Think mugshot,” James Cheetham says, “a head and shoulders photo of you growling, snarling, eyes rolled in the back of your head…standard zombie poses. Try to refrain from photos taken at Grandma’s 97th birthday party, they just aren’t that scary…”
